In a New York Times op-ed titled “The Day The Music Died,” Freddie O’Connell recounts tuning into Vanderbilt University’s radio station as a proud alum and former DJ, only to find it was blaring classical music and belonged to a local public radio station. Little did I know that I would be apart of the small-but-mighty army of college radio nerds fighting to keep it alive in a world that is rapidly moving beyond its existence. I joined KWUR because I had been craving the same sense of camaraderie through music that I had at my performing arts high school, and KWUR seemed like the perfect place to find it. KWUR’s survival was at stake.Ī sophomore in college, I was the Electronic Music Director at the time. They explained that KWUR would have to storm the Student Union’s next meeting to contest their budget decision.
The general manager at the time, Jack Elliott-Higgins, handed the floor over to the Events Committee, which consisted of two people named Jake and Avery, dressed in a thrifted grandparent’s sweater and vintage lingerie, respectively. Students piled into the lounge and plopped their backpacks down without much of the usual chatting the mood was somber, with a hint of anxiety.
The KWUR studio is divided into two parts: the lounge and the actual studio where shows take place. The reviews can be traced back to the 1970s, many of them nearly invisible due to years of ink erosion. Every album was labeled as a “new release” at one point, and students were given the opportunity to review them in exchange for KWUR credits. On each record and CD on the shelves of the station is a piece of paper taped on the back with a handwritten review from a student.

There are drawings covering the walls- mostly genitalia- that are decades old, and a stack of KWUR posters ranging from the 1990s to present day that are free to take. The meetings take place in the KWUR studio, a room lined with hundreds of records from floor to ceiling and bean bags as seating options. That is, until Student Union announced that KWUR 90.3FM would receive no funding.Īt the following KWUR executive board meeting, tensions ran high. In the Spring of 2019, KWUR had big plans: assuming their budget would remain consistent with the past year’s, they had scheduled Junglepussy, a popular Indie rapper, to perform during their annual KWUR Week. These clubs range from the Wilderness Project to the Emergency Services Team to KWUR 90.3FM, the school’s radio station. Louis Student Union allocates a certain amount of money to most clubs that request funding.
